Yandex.Direct in 2026: step-by-step guide to neural network campaigns
Neural network campaigns in Ya.Direct replaced classic ones in 2024–2025. But they are stupid in a narrow niche and waste the budget in the first week. Full guide: setting up the Wizard, manual campaigns, audience selection, RSA, errors. With a table of recommendations for niches.

Yandex Direct in 2026 is not “contextual advertising” as it was known in 2018. Neural network campaigns have replaced most of the classic functionality, and now the algorithm itself decides who to show your banner to, for what queries and for what bid. On the one hand, this makes it easier to start, on the other hand, it turns the office into a black box that gets stuck in narrow niches and drains the budget in the first week.
I lead 4 projects on Yandex Direct with performance budgets from 300K to 2M ₽/month - in e-com, MedTech, fintech and B2B SaaS. This article is a practical guide for marketers in 2026: what has changed, what campaigns to launch, what not to do, and how to read reports in the new paradigm. Without rewriting help from Yandex.
Neural network campaigns in Yandex Direct are not “magic that will do everything for you.” This is a tool that requires properly prepared data at the input and constant monitoring at the output.
What has changed in Yandex Direct for 2024–2026
- The Campaign Wizard has become the dominant tool. 70%+ of new campaigns are created through it
- Classic formats (text-graphics, dynamic) have been transferred to neural network tracks. The algorithm itself selects queries and audiences
- The old manual campaigns still work, but require expertise. An unprepared “handle” receives fewer impressions than a neural network format
- Attribution via Ya.Metrika has changed — processing of referrers from instant messengers, tightening Safari ITP, and some signals are lost. Details in my article about attribution 2026
- Native integration with TG Ads has appeared through a single account (at the pilot stage for large advertisers)
Campaign Wizard vs Manual Campaigns: What to Choose
When the Master is working
A master is “a campaign that the algorithm sets up for your site.” You provide the URL, set goals and budget, and the algorithm decides the rest. Works well when:
- The site has a complete semantic structure with tags and categories
- Pixel is configured and delivering real conversions
- Budget no less than 30–50K ₽/month - the algorithm needs data for training
- The niche is quite wide (e-com mass market, EdTech, mobile applications)
When the Master drains the budget
- Narrow niche with a small number of requests (specialized B2B tool)
- A business card website without structure - there is no place for the algorithm to learn
- Budget less than 20K ₽/month - not enough for training
- Seasonal products with sharp peaks - the algorithm reacts slowly to changes in demand
When are manual campaigns needed?
In three cases, manual campaigns beat the Master:
- Narrow commercial requests in high-margin niches. “Turnkey dental implantation Moscow” - The master blurs out general requests. Manual - gives targeted impressions only for this phrase
- Brand queries. Protecting your brand from being intercepted by competitors through a manual campaign with a minimum bid
- Retargeting for specific segments. When to show a specific ad to a specific cohort
Optimal account structure in 2026: 60–70% of the budget in the Master, 20–30% in manual campaigns for narrow queries, 10% for retargeting.
How to set up a neural network campaign correctly
Basic checklist before launch:
- Pixel + goals in Ya.Metrica. Without fully configured goals, the neural network does not know what to optimize for. Required: goals “sent the form”, “reached the cart”, “finished reading the page for 60+ seconds”, “made a purchase”
- Minimum 50 conversions per week at the start. Less - the algorithm will not learn in a reasonable time. If the project has less, start with the goal “higher in the funnel” (viewing the product page instead of making a purchase)
- A site with a clear structure. The algorithm reads H1, tags, descriptions, prices - and selects queries based on them. A site without clear semantics ≠ a campaign without clear targeting
- Minimum 5 ads per group. The algorithm A/B tests them against each other. Less is not enough variety
- The training period is 7–14 days without intervention. Do not touch the settings during this period. One of the main sources of failures is “after 3 days I saw that the CPL was high and reconfigured everything”
Optimization strategies: what to choose in 2026
There are 4 main strategies available in Yandex Direct 2026:
| Strategy | When to choose | Minimum for training |
|---|---|---|
| Cost per conversion (CPA) | The target cost per lead is known, there are ≥50 conversions/week | ~50 conversions |
| Maximum conversions within budget | The budget is fixed, you need maximum leads | ~30 conversions |
| Maximum clicks | Brand campaign, you need coverage + acquaintance | not critical |
| Manual bid management | Brand queries, narrow manual campaigns | not applicable |
The main mistake I see: marketers start with “pay for conversions”, but do not have 50 conversions/week, and the algorithm does not learn. It’s more correct to start with “maximum conversions within the budget,” accumulate data for 2–4 weeks, then switch to CPA.
YAN - what is it and is it worth connecting
YAN (Yandex advertising network) - billions of partner sites on which advertising banners are displayed. In 2024–2026, YAN switched to neural network targeting based on interests and behavioral signals.
In what cases does YAN work:
- When a product requires warming up, YAN shows a banner to the user at a time when he is not searching, but is interested in the topic
- For retargeting, we catch up with site visitors on other sites
- For Brand awareness - low cost per impression
Which ones do not:
- When you need direct conversions “here and now,” search works better
- In narrow B2B niches - YAN is optimized for mass segments
- Without creatives - YAN requires visual content (banners, videos)
5 common mistakes in Yandex Direct 2026
- Running without fully configured targets. The most common mistake. An algorithm without goals optimizes for nothing.
- Twitching of settings in the first 2 weeks. The algorithm needs time to learn. Each edit is a restart of training
- Using the Wizard in a narrow niche. The algorithm blurs targeting for “similar” queries and wastes budget on irrelevant audiences
- Ignoring YAN in the overall mix. Search only = missing 30-50% of potential conversions
- There is no attribution strategy. The campaign “works” in the Yandex Direct report, but in Ya.Metrica there are no conversions. The source of the problem is attribution between the office and analytics
CPC and CPL benchmarks by niche
Median from my projects 2025–2026:
| Niche | CPC (search) | CPC (YAN) | CPL |
|---|---|---|---|
| E-com average 3–8K ₽ | 35–80 ₽ | 12–25 ₽ | 200–400 ₽ |
| MedTech clinics | 120–280 ₽ | 25–60 ₽ | 500–1 000 ₽ |
| Fintech/trading | 150–400 ₽ | 30–80 ₽ | 800–1 500 ₽ |
| B2B SaaS | 200–500 ₽ | 40–100 ₽ | 2 000–4 000 ₽ |
| Gaming B2C | 25–60 ₽ | 10–22 ₽ | 300–600 ₽ |

Workflow of Yandex Direct in 2026
The standard weekly rhythm by which I conduct performance projects:
- Monday. Reconciling the results of the previous week, updating dashboards, setting tasks for the team for the current week
- Tuesday–Thursday. Active work: new ads, A/B tests, adjusting negative keyword lists, testing new audiences
- Friday. Preparation of a report for the client / management, conclusions for the week, hypotheses for the next
- Within a week. Monitoring alerting via n8n: if CPL jumps 1.5× from the planned level - notification to TG within an hour. More details about automation in my article about 10 n8n scenarios
AI in working with Yandex Direct
Over the past 18 months, AI has become a real tool for conducting Yandex Direct:
- Creative generation — Veo 3.1 for video in YAN, Nano Banana Pro for static banners
- Prompts for generating headlines — 30 headline options for one campaign in 5 minutes (details in 7 prompts for a marketer)
- Anomaly analysis via Claude — I run the weekly project report through Claude and get a list of anomalies for checking
- Forecasting seasonal peaks — Claude forecasts demand 2-4 weeks ahead based on historical data + calendar factors
If you are currently running Yandex Direct and suspect that your budget is “flowing away” - come for a 30-minute discovery. I’ll break down your office and show you which 3-5 changes will give the greatest effect in the first 2 weeks. There is also team training programs — for performance teams of 5 people.
