RuStore 2026: ASO and application promotion after Google Play

How to promote a mobile application in RuStore in 2026: ASO for Russian-language search, presets, internal advertising, working with reviews and ratings. CPI benchmarks by niche and how promotion in RuStore differs from Google Play.

Google Play in the Russian Federation ceased to be an installation channel back in 2022, and by 2026, RuStore took away what Play and App Store on Android used to share. A store with pre-installation on new devices, mandatory integration for government applications and its own search, which indexes only the Russian language. If you drag an ASO strategy here from Google Play one-on-one, you are passing traffic by. Below I’ll discuss not “what RuStore is,” but specifically: how to put together a listing for Russian-language search, how presets and internal advertising work, and what CPIs are considered the norm for niches.

Let's be honest about the numbers. I don’t have a personal case with my own RuStore account - I’ve been in digital for 9 years, and most of my mobile practice is UA and ASO in Google Play, App Store and performance purchasing. Therefore, all CPI and conversion ranges below are the market median and related UA practices in comparable niches, and not downloaded from my office. The facts about the structure of RuStore itself are accurate. The numbers are guidelines that you need to check on your project.

The main misunderstanding about RuStore: they think that this is “Google Play, only ours.” It’s more correct to think that this is a store where organics are driven by fresh installations and reviews, and not by the weight of the card accumulated over the years.

1. Where does RuStore get traffic from?

Before ASO, you need to understand which channels generally feed the installations. There are three of them in RuStore, and they are not equal.

The first is organic search within the store. A person types in a request, sees the results, and puts it in. This is what ASO is for. The second is preset. RuStore is pre-installed on devices from a number of Russian vendors, plus there is a service for pre-installing applications on new smartphones. The coverage is large, but this is a “cold” channel: an installation does not equal an active user. The third is internal advertising and paid promotion of the card. This is a managed purchase with a transparent CPI.

I've seen teams celebrate "100K presets" and not understand why DAU isn't growing. Because a preset without onboarding and push-back in the first 72 hours is an icon on the third screen that no one opened. Downloaded does not mean opened. More about this in the material about UA and ASO applications.

Another feature of 2026 is that RuStore has become mandatory for pre-installation on new Android devices sold in the Russian Federation, and for a number of government applications, the store is the only legal distribution channel. For a marketer, this means two things. The audience here is not “fans of import substitution,” but the entire mass of people who bought a new smartphone. And the competition for the top results for commercial queries is growing, because large banks, retail and delivery services have entered the store - those whose budgets for UA are not comparable to indies. It’s pointless to fight them head-on in high-frequency queries; the gain is in mid- and low-frequency queries, where they don’t have the time for precise optimization.

2. Semantics for Russian-language search

RuStore indexes only Russian. The English keys that you pulled from the App Store do not work here at all. The semantics need to be collected anew - from Ya.Wordstat, from the search suggestions of RuStore itself, and from the wording with which people actually call the application, and not what the product called it.

A simple example. The product called the app a “habit tracker.” The user is looking for “habit diary”, “goal tracking”, “to-do list with reminders”. Three different requests, three different intentions - and none of them coincide with what is in the team’s head. I discussed the logic of collecting such semantics separately in an article about semantic core for search; for RuStore it is the same, just a store display instead of a web one.

Select 20-40 keys with real demand and adequate competition. Not 200 - the card is not rubber, and relevance spread over hundreds of queries kills positions for those that you really need. I usually divide the core into three groups: one or two high-frequency units under the title, five to seven mid-range units under a short description and the first paragraph, the rest is a long tail that catches targeted intentions and has almost no competition. The long tail in RuStore is underestimated: for the query “expense tracking application with categories” there are several times fewer competitors than for “finance”, and the intention there is ardent.

3. Title, descriptions and where the keys live

RuStore does not have a separate keyword field, like the App Store. The search reads three blocks of text, and they are weighted differently.

FieldLimitWhat's there
Headingup to 50 charactersBrand plus main HF key. Weighs in the ranking the most
Short descriptionup to 80 charactersBenefit plus the second key. Both the person in the search results and the search read it
Full descriptionup to 4000 charactersKeys in the first 2-3 paragraphs, then text for a person

A common mistake is to fill the full description with keys along the entire length. The search indexes the beginning more than the end, and the user simply does not scroll to the end. The first paragraph decides: there is both the main key and the reason to install the application right now.

4. Icon and screenshots as a conversion, not as an index

The icon and screenshots are not indexed in the search. They work for something else—conversion from impression to install. And this is half the success: you can stand in the top for the key and lose it, because the card is not convincing.

The icon should be read in a second in dense search results. Do not overload with details, do not repeat the title in text - there is room for meaning, not for duplication. The first two or three screenshots are not about the interface “how beautiful it is in our application”, but about capturing the benefits: what a person will get. A screenshot with the caption “all financial accounting in one screen” hits harder than a bare screen of a table without context.

A video on a card is nice, but not necessary. I wouldn't waste a resource on it before the title, first screenshot and reviews are squeezed out.

5. Reviews and ratings - organic fuel

In RuStore, freshness and flow of reviews influence rankings more than people from Google Play are used to. Not the rating accumulated over five years, but the dynamics: how many new ratings have come in in recent weeks and how you react to negativity.

The working mechanics are a built-in request for feedback after a value action. Not on the second “rate us” run, when the person has not yet received anything, but after he has closed the task: placed an order, completed the training, saved the document. Then the assessment is high and meaningful.

Work off negativity in the first 24 hours. The public response to a one-star review is seen by others, and often it is this response, and not the negative itself, that shapes the decision to leave or pass by. Silence in response to negativity is a minus to the listing conversion, which you won’t even see in the report.

6. Ranking factors and what to do with them

RuStore does not publish the exact weights of the algorithm, so the table below is a prioritization based on the observed effect and the logic of store searches, and not downloaded from the documentation. Order is more important than exact percentages.

FactorWeightWhat to do
Relevance of the header to the requesthighMain RF key in title up to 50 characters
Volume and speed of fresh installationshighMatch UA bursts to releases without smearing them
Rating and flow of new reviewshighIn-app request after value action
Keys in short and full descriptionaverageKeys in the first paragraphs, not throughout
Retention after installationaverageOnboarding and push returns in the first 72 hours
Icon and screenshotsindirectIncrease listing conversion, not position directly

7. Internal advertising and connection with external traffic

When the ASO base is squeezed out, only paid traffic grows further. RuStore has card promotion in search and selections - this is controlled by CPI, in contrast to unpredictable organics. It makes sense to connect when the listing is already converting and you won’t lose the paid impression on a weak card.

External traffic runs in parallel. You can drive to the RuStore card from Yandex Direct and from VK Ads - these are the two main performance channels in the Russian Federation for 2026. The key here is to consider the end-to-end economy rather than the CPC. A cheap click from Direct, which gave an installation without activation, is more expensive than an expensive click with an active user. How to compare CPI with CAC and not deceive yourself in terms of the denominator - I discussed in the material about CPI and CAC calculation.

8. CPI benchmarks and install conversions by niche

Once again, a frame so that there are no illusions. The numbers below are the market median and related practice of UA on Android in the Russian Federation, not downloaded from the RuStore account. The CPI of the menu depends on the geo, creative, season and quality of the card, so these are arbs to check your numbers, not the target.

NicheCPICR display in installation
Gaming (casual)25–60 ₽25–40%
Utilities and services40–90 ₽20–35%
E-com applications50–120 ₽18–30%
Fintech and banks80–200 ₽12–22%
Subscription services60–150 ₽15–28%

If your CPI goes well beyond the top of the range, this is not a death sentence, but a signal to check two things: the quality of the card (conversion from impression to install) and the accuracy of semantics. Often it’s not a matter of expensive traffic, but the fact that the card is not convincing and the listing drains already paid impressions.

9. Typical mistakes on RuStore

Transferring ASO from Google Play by copy-paste. English-language keys, Western creatives for a different audience, betting on the accumulated weight of a card - all this is not played out in RuStore. The semantics are reassembled, the visuals are often reshot for the Russian audience and moderation.

Rely on presets as installations. One hundred thousand presets without onboarding is one hundred thousand cold icons. The channel only works in conjunction with returns in the first three days.

Silence on negative reviews. In a store where the freshness of reviews drives the search results, an unanswered unit is a double minus: to the rating and to the listing conversion. Another common one is optimizing external traffic for CPC instead of CPI and retention. And the assembly of semantics “from the head of the product”, and not from real user requests.

Conclusion

RuStore is not “Google Play, only ours,” and the copy-paste strategy does not transfer here. Here there is a Russian-language search without a keyword field, organics are driven by fresh installations and a flow of reviews, and presets provide coverage, but not activation. A title of up to 50 characters with a main key, the first paragraph of description and the first screenshot decide more than long text and video. The CPI benchmarks from the table are guidelines for checking your numbers, not a target: I’ve been in digital for 9 years and have learned not to trust other people’s averages without checking them on my project.
