Yandex Zen 2026: recommendation algorithm, SEO traffic and channel monetization

Zen in 2026 is not a content dump, but a 45M+ MAU platform with a three-wave algorithm and SEO indexing in Yandex in 48 hours. Analysis: how the recommendation algorithm works, which formats Zen promotes and which it buries, CPM of monetization by niche (80-200 ₽/1K reads) and 5 typical mistakes of new channels.

Article cover:Yandex Zen 2026: recommendation algorithm, SEO traffic and channel monetization

Nine out of ten marketers I've talked to about Zen either consider it a recipe platform for retirees, or tried it a year ago and got 200 views. In 2026, this is no longer the case - neither in terms of coverage nor in terms of SEO potential.

I have three projects with an active Zen channel right now. One is MedTech (dentistry, 14,000 reads per month, CPM 160 ₽), the second is B2B SaaS (financial consulting, 8,000 reads, CPM 190 ₽), the third is a personal blog of an HR expert (22,000 reads, monetization 3,600 ₽/month). The numbers are not record-breaking, but stable and without an advertising budget.

Zen is not a content dump and not a VK alternative. This is an SEO tool with a reach add-on that works on reads, not subscribers.

1. Why Zen in 2026 if there is TG and VK

Since August 2022, Zen has been owned by VK Group - this is a detail that half of marketers do not know. Renamed to simply “Zen”, domain dzen.ru. Yandex sold it. But traffic from Yandex.Search has not gone away: Zen’s articles are still indexed in Yandex within 24-48 hours and reach the top 10 for information queries faster than new pages on most sites.

Zen's MAU at the beginning of 2026 is about 45M users. This is the second largest content channel in the Russian Federation after VK. Telegram is comparable in volume, but it has different mechanics: TG is a push channel (you write, subscribers read), Zen is a pull channel (the algorithm itself finds an audience for the article). For content marketing, the difference is fundamental: TG requires an audience before publication, but Zen does not.

The main practical difference between Zen: it works without subscribers. A new article gets read through the recommendation algorithm, even if the channel has zero followers. Neither VK nor TG provides this.

2. How the recommendation algorithm works

The algorithm works in three waves. Understanding these mechanics is the difference between 500 views and 50,000 for one article.

The first wave is the first 2-4 hours after publication. Zen shows the article to subscribers and similar audiences (look-alike based on interests). If the completion CR reaches 35-40%, the second wave is launched. No - the article goes silent.

The second wave is a thematic feed. Zen identifies the topic and displays the article to users reading similar content. This is 6-24 hours after publication. CR is again needed at least 35-40% - then the third wave is launched.

The third wave is a wide recommendation feed, including the Zen main page. Articles with 50K-500K views live there. It is impossible to get there without sequentially passing the first two waves.

The main metric is completion of reading: the user spent at least 40 seconds on the page. Likes and comments are good, but the algorithm primarily looks at time. In practice: a long article with a normal title can get 40% of reads, a short clickbait article can get 8%, and it’s the first one that gets distribution.

3. Formats: what Zen promotes, what it buries

FormatDistributionSEO indexingProfitability (my estimate)When to use
Article (1500-4000 words)HighYes (24-48 hours)80-200 ₽/1K finished reading.Basic format
Article (up to 800 words)AveragePartially60-120 ₽/1KNews, announcements
VideoAverageNo40-80 ₽/1KReach, not monetization
Narrative (story format)LowNo20-40 ₽/1KArticle announcements only
ShortsAverageNo30-60 ₽/1KVK Clips work better

Narratives are the most common mistake when starting out on Zen. They look like Stories: swipe right, pictures, short texts. Created quickly. The algorithm promotes them minimally. I have seen channels that did only narratives for 3 months and received 200-300 views in total. The same authors, after switching to articles, received 5000-8000 views per publication in the first month.

4. SEO traffic through Zen: get to Yandex.Search

The most underrated Zen mechanic for marketers. Articles are indexed quickly by Yandex - sometimes faster than website pages. Reason: Zen has a high domain trust in Yandex, and articles receive priority when crawling.

In practical terms, this means: if you have a new website with zero domain authority, Zen is a way to appear in Yandex.Search for information queries within 48 hours. In dentistry, which I run: the clinic’s website was not ranked for the query “dental implantation Moscow” at all, an article on Zen got into the top 5 after 4 days. Traffic - 340 clicks in the first month.

The SEO structure of an article for Zen is the same as for a website: the first H2 is a question from Yandex.Wordstat, TL;DR in the first 100-150 words with a direct answer to the question in the title, table with data. Zen is drawn to structured content—that’s what Yandex.Neuro shows in AI responses. Read more about optimization for AI responses - in a separate analysis.

Separately about the Webmaster, because this advice wanders from article to article. Start a channel in Ya.Webmaster there is no point: the channel lives on someone else’s domain dzen.ru, and the site’s help directly states that linking the counter to the Webmaster does not affect the indexing of the channel’s materials. Publications are indexed by the main Yandex robot itself. You need a webmaster for your own website.

What is really worth doing after publication is to connect a Yandex Metrica counter to the channel: this is the only way to separate search transitions from impressions in the feed. The mechanics and checking of indexing by the site: operator are discussed in separate article about Zen indexing.

5. Monetization: CPM, affiliate program, direct placements

The Zen affiliate program is the easiest way to monetize. The threshold according to current conditions is 30 hours of viewing from subscribers over the last 30 days, then mandatory moderation. They pay for reading time and only for text formats: videos are not monetized. A full analysis of the conditions, withdrawal of money and taxes is in article about monetization of Zen.

Further in the table - my own assessment profitability by niche: I recalculated it for my channels as monthly income divided by reads. The site does not have a published tariff, so this is a guideline for estimation, and not Zen’s rate.

NicheAt 1K reads (my estimate)10K reads/month100K reads/month
Finance, jurisprudence150-200 ₽1 500-2 000 ₽15 000-20 000 ₽
Medicine, health130-180 ₽1 300-1 800 ₽13 000-18 000 ₽
Technologies, IT100-140 ₽1 000-1 400 ₽10 000-14 000 ₽
Marketing, business90-130 ₽900-1 300 ₽9 000-13 000 ₽
Lifestyle, entertainment80-100 ₽800-1 000 ₽8 000-10 000 ₽

Direct placements work differently. If a channel has 20K+ subscribers, it is cheaper for brands to pay directly than through an advertising account. The cost of a native article on the 20-50K channel is from 15,000 to 50,000 rubles. Zen has no control over these transactions.

The third model is Zen as a lead generator for your product. Not monetization through the platform, but traffic to the site or TG bot. Dentistry from the example above: 340 transitions → 28 requests for consultation → 12 records. CPL 0 ₽ - paid only for content production. This is stronger than CPM monetization in most commercial niches.

6. Typical mistakes when starting a channel

1. Narratives instead of articles. I already wrote above: the first 2-3 months - only long articles. Narratives are an addition, not a basis.

2. Mixed topics. The algorithm builds a channel profile based on content. Cooking plus finance plus travel in one channel - the algorithm doesn’t understand who to show it to, and the coverage is zero. One channel = one topic.

3. Clickbait headlines. “You Won't Believe What I Found in the Hospital” is YouTube of 2018. Zen punishes clickbait through the bounce metric: clicked, didn’t finish reading - a minus in the algorithm. Zen working header = H1 from Yandex.Wordstat.

4. Irregularity of publications. Minimum 2 publications per week for new channels. With a pause of 2+ weeks, the coverage of the following articles drops by 30-40% and is restored only by 3-4 publications.

5. Links without UTM. Zen does not provide built-in analytics of website traffic. All links in articles are with UTM tags, otherwise traffic from Zen is mixed with organic search in Ya.Metrica. About UTM tag scheme - separate article.

7. Summary

Zen is not a replacement for TG or VK. This is a separate tool with different mechanics: it works on reads, not subscribers, provides SEO indexing in Yandex, and is suitable for content marketing without an advertising budget.

Three things at the start: register a channel with a clear topic, publish 5 articles of 2000+ words with headings from Wordstat, connect a Metrics counter to the channel. This is the minimum tested on six channels.
