VK Clips for marketing in 2026: a format that replaced Instagram Reels in Russia
VK Clips has gone from a “copy of Reels” to an independent ecosystem with 30M+ MAU. Real coverage is 100K–1M per video, the algorithms are more stable than the old ones. A guide to creating, promoting and monetizing Clips for a marketer.

In 2022, VK Clips was called a “copy of Reels,” and this was an accurate description. By 2024, it became clear that this is no longer a copy, but an independent ecosystem with 30M+ MAU, its own algorithm mechanics and its own commercial model. Marketers who aren't working with Clips in 2026 are missing out on a channel where 100K-1M reach per video is the norm, not viral success.
Disclaimer by position: in 2020–2022 I was one of the first official ambassadors of VKontakte Clips and VK moderator in the “Photo” category. This means that some of the observations in this article are from inside the platform, not just from the advertiser. Where this is relevant, I note it.
Since 2023, I have launched Clips strategies on three gaming projects, one e-com and one MedTech client. This article is a practical analysis of the format for a marketer: what to shoot, how to promote, how to monetize and where it merges. Without "10 Secrets of Viral Videos".
VK Clips in 2026 is not a “short video for VK”. This is a separate media product with rules that differ from Reels, TikTok, and regular VK posts.
What's changed in Clips 2024–2026
The main shifts that made the platform important for marketers:
- MAU increased from 18M to 30M+ - this is no longer a niche audience, but a mass delivery channel
- The algorithm has stabilized. In 2022, “viral success” was an accident. In 2026, it is clear what signals give coverage: completion rate, save rate, share rate
- Native monetization has appeared. Creators get a cut of advertising between Clips, similar to YouTube Shorts
- Business accounts received tools. Analytics, A/B tests Clips, direct integration with VK Ads for boost
As a result, Clips became not an “additional channel for the VK community”, but the main content format. A community without Clips now looks like a community without posts in 2018.
How the Clips algorithm works in 2026
The algorithm optimizes for 4 signals, in descending order of weight:
- Completion rate — what proportion of viewers watched to the end. Main signal. On a 7-second video the norm is 70–80%, on a 15-second video – 50–60%, on a 30-second video – 30–40%
- Save rate - saving to bookmarks. The signal is “the content is useful and I want to review it.” On my gaming-Clips save rate 5–8% gives a strong boost
- Share rate - forwarding to private messages. “Content is worthy of discussion” signal
- Engagement (likes + comments) - less important signal than the three above, but still taken into account
What does NOT work: likes by themselves (without other signals), long videos > 60 seconds, videos without an exciting first frame, vertical not in 9:16 format.
Which Clips really get coverage?
Over 3 years of working with the format, I have identified 5 types of Clips that consistently provide 50K+ coverage:
Type 1. Hook + one idea in 7-10 seconds
The most stable format. The first 1-2 seconds are a visually arresting hook (a strong shot, an unexpected angle, a provocative phrase). Next - one short thought or action. The end is open or with a CTA.
Examples of hooks that worked on my projects:
- Text on screen: "9 out of 10 marketers are doing it wrong"
- Shot of a hand turning something "ordinary" into "unexpected"
- A direct question to the camera: “Are you also losing 30% of your budget on this?”
Type 2. Tutorial / how-to in 15–25 seconds
A specific life hack or sequence of actions. Works in B2B, EdTech and niche interests. The save rate on such videos is often 8–12% - higher than on entertainment formats.
Type 3. Emotional story-driven narrative 30–45 seconds
A personal story with an emotional curve. Setup → problem → resolution. Works well for luxury brands, lifestyle, psychology. The completion rate is lower (35–45%), but the quality of the audience is higher.
Type 4. POV / behind-the-scenes 10–15 seconds
First person. “One day in the life...”, “In the morning at work,” “This is what my desk looks like.” Low production effort, high ER. Good for personal brand and B2B.
Type 5. Contrarian take 8–12 seconds
One thesis that contradicts the industrial mainstream. It is important to back it up with information or a specific case, otherwise it reads as “provocation for the sake of provocation.”
Production of Clips: how to do it quickly
In 2026, the entire Clips production can be done by one marketer in half an hour per video. The stack I use:
- For shooting — iPhone 15+ with Cinematic 4K mode, or Veo 3.1 for AI-generated frames (details in my article about Veo for a marketer)
- For installation — CapCut on iPad. 80% of Clips are mounted in it; for complex ones - Premiere Rush
- For sound — ElevenLabs voiceover + free tracks from the VK library
- For texts — built-in CapCut effects with auto-subtitles in Russian
- For miniature — Nano Banana Pro for cover generation 9:16
A complete production pipeline for one marketer with an AI stack - in mine article about a team of 5 roles.
Clips promotion: where boost works, where it doesn’t
The main myth of 2026: “I posted it - VK will disperse it itself if the video is good.” Partially true: the algorithm really picks up completion-rate-strong videos. But without a boost, the new channel’s reach will be 5–15% of subscribers.
What does acceleration give:
- VK Ads on Clips - separate format in the office. Minimum 500 ₽/day. I use it for videos that have already shown a good organic completion rate
- Cross-posting to the community — publication of the Clip in the community feed in addition to the Clips section. Double coverage
- Request for reaction from subscribers - “rate this clip, I’m testing a new format.” ER in the first hours is critical for the algorithm
- Coordination with micro-influencers — ask 2-3 channels to repost the Clip in the first 24 hours
What does NOT work:
- Buying views through exchanges - the algorithm understands that the completion rate is synthetic
- Hashtags - in 2026 they will no longer be a ranking factor
- Geotargeting for B2C videos - VK distributes natively based on interests, geography is less important
Metrics I keep in the Clips dashboard
| Metrica | What does it show | Norm |
|---|---|---|
| Completion rate | Video quality for the algorithm | 50–80% by length |
| Save rate | Content usefulness | 2–8% |
| Share rate | Viral potential | 0.5–3% |
| Average watch time | Hold | 5–25 sec |
| Reach/views | Coverage | 10K–500K |
| Click-through (to website/profile) | Conversion-power | 0.3–2% |
Monetizing Clips for Marketers
3 models operating in 2026:
- Direct conversion — Clip leads to the landing page through a clickable link in the description or community. Conversion is 0.3–2%, but with 100K coverage this is 300–2000 clicks per video
- Brand awareness + retargeting — Clip creates coverage, and conversions are caught by retargeting advertising on VK Ads in 1–7 days. More details in my VK Ads guide
- Native advertising in other people's Clips — order a Clip from a blogger. Prices are comparable to posts in TG channels: 5–50K ₽ depending on the size of the blogger
5 common mistakes marketers make with Clips
- Direct adaptation of Reels. Reels were made for the TikTok context and Western audiences. VK Clips need different hooks and different lengths
- Overestimation of duration. “I shot 30 seconds - the algorithm should love it.” The algorithm loves completion. At 30 seconds completion is lower than at 8
- Ignoring the first 2 seconds. The first frame is 80% of the decision about watching. If he is boring, the inspection will not happen
- Posting without a schedule. The algorithm gives priority to channels with regular posting. 3–5 Clips per week minimum
- No metrics. They post and don’t look at analytics. Then they don’t understand what format works and continue to make average videos
How many Clips per week do you need and how much does it cost?
The minimum for growth is 3 Clips per week. Optimum - 5–7. Over 10 is overkill for most brands; content begins to compete with itself.
Production cost for 5 Clips/week using the AI stack:
- Marketer time — 4–6 hours per week on scripts + editing
- Veo 3.1 API — ~$15/week for 5 videos with AI content (based on an 8-second video in HD)
- ElevenLabs — $22/month (shared across all Clips)
- Nano Banana for miniatures — ~$2/week
Total: ~$35/week = ~12K ₽/month for 20 Clips per month. The equivalent in 2023 through the production team is 200–350K ₽/month. This is exactly the arithmetic that I understand in main article about the AI stack.
If you currently have a VK community without Clips or Clips are published “when they remember”, 60–80% of the channel’s reach is almost always missed.
