CRO 2026: a 20-point checklist for increasing website conversion by 35-80%
CRO is the cheapest optimization in performance marketing. Before increasing the budget, run the site through a 20-point checklist: speed, structure, forms, trust. Tools without a budget (Ya.Metrika Webvisor + Hotjar), ICE prioritization, when to connect A/B tests. With realistic conversion benchmarks for 5 niches.

CRO is the most underrated discipline in performance marketing. Marketers are ready to spend 500K ₽/month on advertising with a landing page conversion of 0.8%, instead of raising the conversion to 2.2% in 2 weeks of work and saving 60% of the budget. This article is a practical CRO checklist for sites with 1000-50000 unique traffic per month, without the need for expensive A/B services.
I worked with CRO on 15+ projects: clothing e-com, MedTech clinic, EdTech courses, B2B software, lead gen for agencies. The average increase in conversion after a full audit is 35-80% in the first 2 iterations of edits. The numbers in the article are from these cases and correspondence with the CRO community.
If your CPL is high, a marketer’s first instinct is to “optimize campaigns.” Often the right decision is to optimize the landing. This gives 2-3 times more effect at lower costs.
1. Why CRO before increasing your advertising budget?
Simple math. A site with a conversion of 1% and a CPC of 50 ₽ is a CPL of 5000 ₽. The same site with a conversion of 2.5% is a CPL of 2000 ₽. Without changing your advertising budget, you get 2.5 times more leads. This is the CRO effect.
Most marketers believe that “improving a website” is about design or content. In practice, CRO is about removing specific barriers in the funnel. Not “to make the site more beautiful”, but “to make sure that the person who clicked “buy” does not fall off on the payment form.”
2. Anatomy of a conversion funnel
Any conversion is broken down into steps:
- Step 1. Traffic came to the site (Ya. Metrica - visits)
- Step 2. Not a failure (Ya.Metrika - failures <30 seconds)
- Step 3. View landing page (product card / form)
- Step 4. Action in the form (opening, filling out at least 1 field)
- Step 5. Submitting the form / completing payment
At every step, some users drop out. CRO is about finding the step with the biggest drawdown and working with it. There is no point in painting the “buy” button green if 70% of users drop out at the stage of viewing the product card.
3. CRO checklist of 20 points
I go through this checklist on every new project. Each point is a potential point of growth.
Speed and technique (5 points):
- PageSpeed Insights Mobile ≥ 80
- Largest Contentful Paint < 2.5 sec
- Time to Interactive < 3.5 sec
- Images are compressed (WebP, lazy loading)
- Adaptive layout tested on iPhone SE and iPhone Pro Max
Page structure (5 points):
- The main message and CTA are visible above the first scroll on mobile
- Social proof in the first 2 screens (reviews, cases, numbers)
- A clear value proposition - what you do and for whom
- One main CTA, no blurred focus for 5 buttons
- Explanation of what will happen after clicking on the CTA
Forms (5 points):
- No more than 4 fields for lead generation
- Fields with autocomplete (phone, email) - support for browser autofill
- Inline validation (the error is shown immediately, not after sending)
- The submit button is not “Send”, but a description of the benefit (“Get a quote in 2 minutes”)
- Guarantee / privacy statement next to the form
Trust and persuasiveness (5 points):
- Real team or product photos, not stock
- Specific numbers (number of clients, years of work, cases)
- Reviews with photo and name, preferably video reviews
- Certificates, awards, mentions in the media
- An easy way to contact alternatively: Telegram, WhatsApp, chat
4. CRO Toolkit Without a Budget
| Tool | What does it show | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Ya.Metrica - Webvisor | Session recordings with cursor and clicks | 0 ₽ |
| Ya.Metrica - scrolling map | Where the page view breaks off | 0 ₽ |
| Ya.Metrica - heat map | Where users click | 0 ₽ |
| PageSpeed Insights | Speed and Core Web Vitals | 0 ₽ |
| Hotjar (free tier) | Heat maps, up to 35 sessions/day | 0 ₽ |
| Plerdy (Russian equivalent) | Heat maps + audit tools | from 0 ₽ |
| GTmetrix | Deep speed audit | 0 ₽ (with limits) |
The minimum set for a CRO audit is Ya.Metrika with Webvisor + PageSpeed Insights enabled. This is enough for 80% of tasks on sites with traffic up to 10K per month.
5. When to connect A/B tests
A/B tests statistically work on traffic from 10,000 unique traffic per month with a conversion of 1%. With less traffic, the sample is too small, the results are random.
Services for A/B for 2026: VWO ($299+/month), AB Tasty ($1500+/month), Optimizely (enterprise), free Google Optimize - closed in 2023. Among the Russian ones is the A/B builder for landing pages built into Tilda.
Minimum test scenario: one hypothesis (for example, “remove the company field from the form”), two versions of the page, test for 2-4 weeks, at least 200-300 conversions in each group. p-value < 0.05 is considered significant.
6. Prioritization of ICE hypotheses
After the audit, you will have 30-50 hypotheses to edit. Implementing everything at once is paralysis. The solution is the ICE framework:
- Impact — potential effect (1-10)
- Confidence — confidence that it will work (1-10)
- Ease — ease of implementation (1-10)
We give each hypothesis 3 marks, multiply it, and get the ICE-score. Top 5 hypotheses by score - let's take it to work. This eliminates the “let’s fix everything we noticed.”
Additionally: setting up Ya.Metrica for CRO measurements, UTM schema to track the source of each conversion, CRM bundle to see which segments convert better into sales.
7. Conclusion
CRO in 2026 is the highest return per unit of effort in performance marketing. A basic audit takes 1-2 business days, the first edits are implemented within a week, a conversion increase of 20-50% in the first 2-3 iterations is a realistic figure, not a marketing wrapper. Before increasing your advertising budget, run your site through a 20-point checklist.
