Pin - a pinned post at the top of a channel or group; also a unit of content on Pinterest.

Pin is a term with a double meaning. In the context of Telegram and VK, a “pin” or “pin” is a post fixed at the top of a channel/group. In the context of Pinterest, a pin is a piece of content: a card with an image and a link to the source.

In Telegram, pinning is one of the few channel navigation tools. I use it for three scenarios: announcement of a current offer (changed every 2-4 weeks), a navigation post with a table of contents of categories (in information channels), a permanent link to a lead magnet or bot. The pin is the first thing a new subscriber sees - it’s the same first screen as the landing page.

In VK, a group can have a pinned post (one) and pinned clips or stories - they are shown to new visitors to the page before the main feed. For commercial pages, I always recommend keeping either a current promotion or a post-acquaintance with a clear CTA.

At Pinterest, a pin is the main unit of distribution. A tall pin (2:3 or 9:16 vertical image) receives more traffic than a square pin. Pinterest is a long-tail SEO platform: a pin can generate traffic for months after being posted, which makes it different from Instagram or TikTok, where content lives for 24-72 hours.
