Activation
Activation is the first key action of the user in the product, after which he is highly likely to stay and return.
Activation is a specific action within a product that correlates with long-term retention. Not “registered”, not “opened the application”, but precisely the action after which the user begins to return. Each product has its own, and the team’s task is to find it through cohort analysis.
Classic examples: for Slack, activation means sending 2000 messages by a team (they found this out statistically, they didn’t invent it). Twitter has a subscription to 30 accounts. In the projects I worked with, one B2B SaaS activation turned out to be the first upload of a report, and not the creation of the first project, although the team was sure of the opposite.
Metric - activation rate: the share of new users who achieved a key action in the first 7 days. SaaS median: 25–40%. If you have below 20%, either the action itself is too complex, or onboarding does not lead to it in a directional way.
A mistake that I see in projects all the time: they confuse activation with registration. A person who registered but did not activate is an outflow, simply postponed. Therefore, I always build a separate cohort “registered - not activated” and launch a separate drip campaign for it with a specific CTA for the key action.
