North Star Metric
North Star Metric is the only metric that reflects the real value of the product to the user, and not the activity of the team.
North Star Metric is a concept from product management: the one metric that best correlates with the long-term value of a product to the user. For Spotify it’s minutes of listening, for Airbnb it’s nights of bookings, for WhatsApp it’s the number of messages sent. Important: NSM is not revenue or DAU per se.
The problem with NSM is that it's easy to screw up. Teams begin to optimize the metric itself, rather than the value behind it. If your NSM is “minutes in app,” you risk a product that deliberately slows down and adds friction to keep the user sitting longer. It's called Goodhart's Law: When a measure becomes a goal, it ceases to be a good measure.
A good NSM answers three questions simultaneously: (1) does it grow when users get real value? (2) can the team influence it through its actions? (3) does it lead to business growth in the long term? If there is not at least one “yes”, it’s not North Star, it’s just a nice number for a slide.
