Growth Loop
Growth Loop is a self-sustaining cycle, where each new user creates the conditions for attracting the next one.
Growth Loop is a concept that replaced the “funnel” in product thinking. The funnel is linear: attracted → converted → lost. Growth Loop is closed: each user creates “fuel” to attract the next one. Examples: a Dropbox user invites a colleague (referral loop), content on Pinterest is indexed in Google and brings new users (SEO loop), the product is integrated into the team’s workflow and the entire team signs up (viral loop).
The difference between a funnel and a loop is fundamental. The funnel requires constant external fuel - advertising budgets, content production, PR. The loop generates its own impulse. The more users in the loop, the faster it spins. This is the exponential growth mechanic that everyone talks about and that few people build intentionally.
To find the growth loop of my product, I ask the question: “What does the user do when he receives value from the product - and how does this action lead to a new user?” If there is no answer, the loop does not exist, and you need to build it. Without a loop, all growth is dependent on budget, leaving you vulnerable to any market change.
