Engagement

involvement · audience involvement

Engagement - audience involvement: likes, comments, reposts, saves, time on content. Main SMM metric.

Engagement - involvement, a general metric of audience reaction to content: likes, comments, reposts, saves, viewing time. In social networks, algorithms (VK, Instagram, TikTok) rank content by engagement - high engagement = more organic impressions.

In my projects I monitor Engagement Rate (ER) = (engagement actions ÷ reach) × 100%. Healthy ER: - VK: 2–5% for thematic communities - Instagram: 3–7% for niche brands - TikTok: 8–15% for gaming / b2c - Telegram: 2–4% (ER through views - view rate) - LinkedIn: 1–3% for b2b

The main problem with engagement as a metric is that it is easy to screw up or make it empty. 1000 likes from bots = 0 sales. Engagement without CR for sale is “fame for fame’s sake.”

That's why I never evaluate SMM only by engagement. The combination of ER + reach + CR into subscription (or sale) is the only meaningful one.

Engagement as a positive ranking signal - yes, I use it. Engagement as an end in itself - no, this is the path to garbage content.

Frequently asked questions about Engagement

What is engagement?+
Engagement - audience involvement in content: likes, comments, reposts, saves, viewing time. Social media algorithms rank content based on engagement—the higher, the more organic impressions. But engagement without conversion to sales is an empty metric.
What is a good engagement rate?+
Depends on the site. VK: 2-5% for thematic communities. Telegram: 2-4% (view rate). TikTok/VK Clips: 8-15%. Important: you can compare ER only within one site and one niche. ER 3% in Telegram is excellent, ER 3% in TikTok is a failure.
