Brief generator

Eight questions about the project - the result is a structured document that can be given to the contractor. Anything you don’t know will go into the “clarify” section rather than being made up for you.

Eight questions. Answer as is, in short phrases - formatting the model will take care of it. What you don’t know, skip it: it will become a point in the brief “clarify”, and not a fiction.
Niche, model, how money comes in now
“We need more applications” is not a task. More by how much and by when
Who decides what is important to him, where he goes
Product, price or range, what’s the difference?
Two or three with websites. If you don’t know, write so
A range will also work. Without this, the contractor will not be able to evaluate the work
Most valuable section: saves the contractor a month
One metric and its meaning

Why the brief is more important than it seems

The contractor evaluates the work based on what he understands. If he got it wrong, the estimate will be incorrect - and this will be revealed in a month, when the money spent, and the result is discussed in terms of “we had something else in mind.”

A brief is a way to get your understanding in writing before you start. Not bureaucracy and insurance for both parties: the customer receives a predictable estimate, the contractor gets the right to say “this was not in the brief.”

Eight questions you can’t start without

  1. What kind of business is it and how does it earn money? Without this, any channels are selected at random.
  2. What a task. “We need more applications” is not a task. More by how much and by what date.
  3. Who is buying? Who makes the decision and what is important to him.
  4. What do we sell and what is the offer? Product, price or range, what is the difference.
  5. Who are the competitors? Two or three with websites. “I don’t know” is also an answer, and a useful one.
  6. Budget and deadlines. Without a range, the contractor will not estimate the amount of work.
  7. What have you already tried? The most valuable point: it saves you a month of repeating other people’s mistakes.
  8. By what number we will understand what happened. One metric and its meaning.

About the “clarify” section

The finished brief will contain a separate list of what is missing. This is not a flaw in the tool, and its main function: to see holes before how they will become a dispute.

The most common hole is the criterion for success. The customer knows what he wants, but not knows what number to measure it with. As long as this number does not exist, any result can be declared both a success and a failure.

What to do with a finished brief

Close the “clarify” points, give it to two or three contractors and compare prices, and the questions they will ask in response. The contractor who simply called the amount according to the brief without reading it - he already showed how he would work further.

If you need a more detailed form for a specific task, there are marketing brief, brief for the site, brief for SMM, design brief and brief for the video.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from your brief templates?
A template is an empty form that you need to fill out yourself and know what to write in each field. The generator comes from the other side: you answer in human language, it brings it into structure and separately writes out what is missing. If you already understand how the brief works, take the template - it is more complete.
Will the model come up with something I didn’t write?
It shouldn’t: in the system prompt this is a direct prohibition, and everything missing is placed in the “What needs to be clarified” section. But you still need to check. If you see a figure in the brief that was not entered, this is an error, and I want to know about it.
Are my answers saved somewhere?
No. The text goes to the model to assemble the document, and is not written to any database on the site side. However, do not insert trade secrets or personal customer data here - this is a general rule for any online tools, not just this one.
Why only eight questions?
Because no one fills out the thirty-field brief completely. Eight is the minimum without which the contractor will not be able to estimate the work or begin it. Everything else is clarified on the first call, and that’s normal.
Is it possible to give the resulting brief to the contractor as is?
First, close the items marked “clarify.” A brief with holes in the budget and success criteria ensures that the estimate will be out of the blue, and the result will be a subject of dispute.
