Day-parting

daily schedule · time targeting · show schedule · time targeting

Day-parting - managing impressions and advertising rates by hour of day and day of week to increase budget efficiency.

Day-parting (time targeting) is a setting in which advertisements are shown only during certain hours and days of the week, or bids are automatically adjusted depending on the time of day. Logic: Users do not convert equally at 3:00 am and at 12:00 pm.

In Yandex Direct this is called “Schedule of impressions” - you can completely disable advertising during non-working hours or set a lowering rate factor. In Google Ads - “Ad display schedule” with increasing/decreasing adjustments by hour and day.

In my practice, day-parting is a mandatory setting for B2B: requests from SaaS projects almost never come at night and on Sunday, but Tuesday-Wednesday 10:00–14:00 is the peak. For B2C and e-com the picture is different: evenings and weekends often give the best CPL. To do this, I first collect data for 30 days without restrictions, download the “By Time” report from Direct, and only then build a schedule.

The main pitfall of day-parting with smart bidding: if you enable a strict limitation on display hours, the algorithm loses some of the signals for training. The compromise is not to turn off impressions completely at night, but to set an adjustment of −70%: the algorithm continues to collect data, but at minimal rates.

Frequently asked questions about Day-parting

What is day-parting?+
Day-parting, or time targeting, is showing ads only at certain hours and days of the week or adjusting bids by time of day. The logic is that users convert differently at 3 a.m. than at noon.
How to set up a show schedule?+
First, collect a minimum of 30 days of data without restrictions, upload a time report and find the hours with the best and worst CPL. Then turn off or lower rates during weak times. In Yandex Direct, this is the Impression Schedule section; in Google Ads, adjustments are made by hours and days.
When is the best time to show ads?+
Depends on the model. In B2B, the peak is weekdays 10:00–14:00, nights and Sundays are almost dead. In B2C and e-com it is often the other way around: evenings and weekends give the best CPL. There is no universal answer, only your time report decides.
Does day-parting interfere with autostrategies?+
Yes, hard shutdown of the clock deprives the algorithm of some signals for training. A compromise is not to turn off impressions completely at night, but to set a downward adjustment, for example -70%: the algorithm continues to collect data, but at minimum rates.
