Cold/Warm/Hot Audience
Cold/Warm/Hot - three-level audience segmentation based on readiness to buy: strangers, familiar with the brand, ready to buy.
Cold/Warm/Hot Audience is a classic three-level segmentation that describes the “temperature” of a potential buyer, that is, his readiness to take a target action right now.
Cold (cold) - people who don’t know about you. They fit the target profile, but have never interacted with the brand. These are Lookalike audiences, targeting by interests, new segments in DSP. They need content that explains the problem and presents a solution - conversion to purchase from the first touch is close to zero.
Warm (warm) - people who know about you: they were on the site, watched the video, subscribed to social networks, opened an email. They are already in the funnel, but have not made a decision. This is the basis of retargeting campaigns. They need more specific offers, cases, comparisons. In my practice, CPL from a warm audience is 2–3 times lower than from a cold one.
Hot (hot) - people with the expressed intention to buy right now: added to cart, looked at the pricing page several times, filled out the form, but did not complete the payment. This is the most converting segment with the highest ROAS. Direct offers work for them: discount, limited time, package upgrade.
The main mistake is showing the same creative to all three audiences. This is a guaranteed failure: the cold audience needs narrative content, the hot audience needs a specific offer. In projects, I always divide campaigns by “temperature” with different budgets (usually 60/25/15 in favor of cold at the growth stage).
